Dr. Biraj Man Karmacharya

Public Health Professional

Dr. Biraj Man Karmacharya is an Associate Professor at the Department of Public Health at Dhulikhel Hospital, Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences. Having founded the Department of Community Programs, he has also been leading it since 2006, involving himself deeply in developing and setting up innovative community-based health and integrated development endeavors in rural Nepal. A PhD in Public Health (Epidemiology), Dr. Karmacharya is passionate about creating innovative models of health care delivery in resource-limited settings. He firmly believes that unleashing the strength of communities is one of the keys to the advancement of health care, especially in the said settings.

A Fulbright Science and Technology Awardee, Dr. Karmacharya also leads the Nepal Technology Innovation Center at Kathmandu University that aims to serve as a platform for bringing the academia and industries together for progressing the rural development. He is a recipient of the prestigious Prabal Janasewa Shree award from the Government of Nepal for his remarkable contributions in promoting rural health care and health research in the country on the Constitution Day of Nepal, 2019. Earlier in 2018, he was awarded as one of the Emerging Leaders by the World Heart Federation.

Living by his beliefs on engaging communities to elevate rural health care and development, Dr. Karmacharya continues to inspire all who doubt whether pursuing public health is a ‘Road Less Travelled’ and serves as a role-model for emerging and existing public health professionals in pursuing high-quality research for designing health programs and policies. Through his relentless dedication in rural health care delivery, health research, and public health training, he holds great promises to change the landscape of public health services, research and training in Nepal. He has ardently adhered to the practice of involving and encouraging communities in public health and leadership
